Low Cost Facebook Engagement
Case Study 394k Facebook Engagements for Under $150

Is it possible to build a massive audience without spending thousands of dollars?

Most digital marketers think you need a huge budget to see real numbers on Facebook. We wanted to prove them wrong. In this experiment, we took a brand new ad account and used a “Smart Engagement” strategy to get massive results for pennies.

Here is the breakdown of how we turned $9.26 into 3,000+ followers and generated nearly 400,000 engagements for less than $150.

Snapshot (The TL;DR)

  • The Goal: Build social proof and engagement cheaply before asking for sales.
  • The Strategy: Switch from expensive “Message” ads to high-volume “Engagement” and “Page Like” ads.
  • The Results:
    • 3,239 New Followers for just $9.26.
    • 394,099 Post Engagements for just $149.68.
    • Cost Per Result: As low as $0.0004 (Yes, that is 4/100ths of a penny!).

The Challenge: “Why Are Leads So Expensive?”

Every business owner faces the same problem eventually: Ad Fatigue.

At the start of this project, we tried running standard “Send Message” and “Lead Generation” campaigns. But we noticed a problem that many of you face: The costs were too high. When you ask a cold audience to “Buy Now” or “Message Us” immediately, Facebook charges you a premium because the competition is high.

We realized that trying to force a sale on a cold audience is like proposing on a first date—it scares people away. We needed a different approach to lower costs and build trust first.

The Solution: The “Video First” Pivot

Instead of fighting for expensive leads, we flipped the script. We decided to “warm up” the audience first using a two-step strategy.

  1. The “Micro-Budget” Follower Campaign

To fix the “Empty Page” syndrome (where a page looks new and untrustworthy), we ran a highly optimized Page Likes campaign.

  • What we did: We spent less than the price of a lunch ($9.26) on simple, relatable image ads.
  • Why it worked: By keeping the budget tiny, we forced Facebook’s algorithm to find the cheapest, most willing followers first.
  1. The “Video Engagement” Hack

This is the most critical part. When Message campaigns became expensive, we carefully switched to Video and Engagement campaigns.

  • Video ads are cheaper because Facebook wants users to stay on the platform watching videos.
  • We ran ads optimized for “Post Engagement” rather than “Sales.”
  • This allowed us to reach nearly 400,000 people and get them to react, share, and comment for a fraction of the cost of a lead ad.

The Results: Analyzing the Data

The numbers from our dashboard tell the real story.

Result A: 3,000 Fans for $9

In our first test, we spent a total of $9.26. In return, we gained 3,239 followers or likes.

  • Cost Per Like: $0.003.
  • Takeaway: You do not need hundreds of dollars to look established. You just need $10 and the right creative.

Result B: The Viral Engagement Spike

In our second test, we focused on engagement. We spent $149.68 and generated a massive 394,099 post engagements.

  • Cost Per Engagement: $0.0004.
  • The Spike: You can see in the chart that once the video campaign took off (right side of the graph), the volume of engagement skyrocketed vertically.

Why This Matters (For Students & Beginners)

Think of Facebook Marketing like making friends at a new school.

  1. Don’t ask for favors immediately: If you ask a stranger for money (Sales Ad), they will say no.
  2. Be interesting first: If you tell a funny joke or show a cool video (Engagement Ad), people will pay attention.
  3. The “Cheaper” Path: Once they like your video, they are more likely to listen to you later. We proved that getting 400,000 people to pay attention costs remarkably little if you use engaging content instead of boring sales pitches.

Final Lesson: When your ads get expensive, stop pushing harder. Step back, switch to video/engagement objectives, and build your audience cheaply. You can always sell to them later!
